Is Claude AI UK or EU Data Resident?

Thought Leadership

AI is transforming enterprise productivity, but for regulated organizations in the UK and Europe, adopting these tools comes with a critical, non-negotiable question: Where is our data actually going? If you are relying on standard off-the-shelf AI subscriptions, achieving true Claude data residency isn’t as straightforward as you might hope. Let’s break down the realities of data residency and how to ensure your proprietary prompts stay exactly where they belong.

The Problem with Standard Subscriptions

Many organizations assume that upgrading to a paid tier solves their data sovereignty and security concerns. However, standard Claude subscriptions cannot guarantee where your data goes.

  • Claude Team: This tier has no data residency guarantee, meaning your prompts and responses may be processed and retained on servers outside the UK or EU.
  • Claude Enterprise: While this tier offers zero data retention, it comes with critical limitations: it only covers Claude Code, explicitly excluding Claude Chat and Claude Cowork.
  • Uncertain Processing: Even on the Enterprise tier, there is still no guarantee that your data is processed within a UK or EU region. Additionally, securing an Enterprise agreement requires authorization from the Anthropic sales team, which is a slow, uncertain process.

If you do not provide a secure, approved solution, your staff will inevitably find other ways to use AI, utilizing consumer versions that expose your data to model providers.

”For highly regulated industries, hoping your data stays local is not a valid compliance strategy. Standard Claude subscription tiers simply cannot provide the concrete residency guarantees that sensitive, enterprise workloads demand“George Lambert, Founder and CEO, Lambert Labs

The Solution: Claude Data Residency on AWS

The most robust way to guarantee data sovereignty is to bring the model to your data, rather than sending your data to the model. By deploying Claude on your own AWS infrastructure backed by Amazon Bedrock, you own the entire stack and maintain complete control over where your data is stored and processed.

Here is how data residency works when Claude is routed through your AWS trust boundary:

  • EU Inference Using Amazon Bedrock’s EU inference profile, requests stay entirely within EU regions (such as Ireland, Frankfurt, Paris, Stockholm, Milan, and Madrid) with no extra surcharge.
  • Strict UK In-Region Processing: For organizations with single-region compliance mandates (such as strict UK GDPR or NCSC requirements), the infrastructure can be configured for strict UK-only processing (eu-west-2).

Because you can configure that your inference only occurs in specified regions, meeting your strict compliance requirements becomes simple.

Beyond Residency: Zero Data Retention

Data residency ensures your data doesn’t cross borders, but data retention dictates whether the AI provider can keep your data once it gets there.

When your inference runs on Amazon Bedrock, it provides zero data retention. This means:

  • Your proprietary data is never shared with the model provider.
  • Amazon Bedrock never stores your prompts.
  • Your data is never used to train their models.
