Google Cloud to AWS migration and application rebuild for Your Pilates Physio

Your Pilates Physio is a HealthTech company providing expert online Pilates classes. Founded by physiotherapist and clinical Pilates instructor Lyndsay Hirst, the subscription platform delivers a library of on-demand video workouts, live-streamed classes and tailored programmes through its web and mobile apps, helping people recover from injury, manage pain and exercise safely at home.

Opportunity / Customer Challenge

Lambert Labs took over Your Pilates Physio’s (YPP) platform, a Python 2.7 application running on Google App Engine with its data held in Google Cloud Datastore. The outdated data model and architecture made new features slow and expensive to build, reporting was difficult, and the managed runtime left little room to scale or tune the application. With a growing subscriber base, YPP needed a platform that could evolve quickly and operate with confidence.

Solution

Lambert Labs rebuilt the application on Django and migrated it to Amazon Web Services. Deployed on Elastic Beanstalk, backed by Amazon Aurora MySQL, Amazon ElastiCache for Redis, Amazon S3 and AWS Lambda for scheduled jobs. We wrote a custom data migration engine that mapped Datastore entity types onto the new schema. Legacy password hashes were carried across intact, so members signed in to the new platform with the credentials they already had, resulting in no disruption.

The migration was handled professionally throughout the whole process, with the technical challenges communicated clearly to us the whole time. We were happy that the final stage of the migration was handled with minimal disruption to our customers or business processes. Outcome

The cutover ran with no data loss. Your Pilates Physio’s full set of historic records – members, subscriptions, video content, gift cards and years of workout tracking – were moved into a relational schema. Separately, Lambert Labs deployed an update to the Android / Apple mobile application to work with endpoints deployed on the new Django application. Lambert Labs continue to work with YPP on new features and optimisation as the subscriber base grows.

YPP’s migration presented us with a great opportunity to leverage our AWS and software development expertise by migrating the application’s entire stack to AWS, and modernizing the application to run on modern software architecture. Thanks to our careful planning, the migration has been a complete success, presenting minimal disruption to YPP’s customers, and establishing a strong foundation for future development.
